How to cancel an extended warranty after selling your car

By Car Warranty Refunds · Sources checked · 4 min read

Selling your car may leave unused coverage in a cancellable vehicle service contract. The sale itself is not proof that a cancellation was submitted. Check whether coverage was transferred, then request cancellation through the dealer or administrator named in your agreement.

Check cancellation versus transfer first

Before asking for a refund, review what you promised the buyer. Did the bill of sale include remaining service-contract coverage? Was a transfer form signed, submitted or approved? Resolve that question before requesting cancellation. You should not represent the same coverage as both transferred to the buyer and canceled for your own refund.

A factory warranty included with the car is a different product from a paid service contract. The refund question generally concerns the separately priced agreement. Gather any transfer confirmation alongside the original contract.

Gather the sale and mileage evidence

Make one folder containing the agreement, sale paperwork and financing records. If you no longer have access to the car, ask for a dated record rather than estimating its current mileage. Evidence of mileage on the relevant date matters more than a fresh photo of a vehicle you no longer own.

Find the original selling dealer or administrator

The business that bought your used car may not be the business that sold the service contract. Read the old agreement to identify the correct recipient. A new dealer’s offer to “handle everything” is useful only if it results in a traceable cancellation request.

Manufacturer names alone are not enough. For example, Flood Ford has a cancellation lookup for its customers; another Ford buyer should verify the correct selling-dealer route instead of assuming that portal will handle the contract.

Ask whether the sale date can be used

Tell the recipient when the car was sold and when you are submitting the request. Ask whether documented sale mileage and the earlier sale date can be accepted. Do not backdate a signature or describe an earlier submission that did not happen.

There is no universal promise of retroactive cancellation. If the provider uses a later date, request the clause supporting that decision and an explanation of any evidence that could change it. Keep both the requested date and the approved effective date in your records.

Separate a refund from the vehicle payoff

A sale can involve several transactions: the buyer pays for the car, a lender releases its lien, and a contract refund is calculated later. Do not assume the sale price or payoff already included a warranty refund. Ask for an itemized closing statement if someone says it did.

If the original loan was paid off, provide the accepted lender evidence and confirm the current payee. Total Warranty Services’ form specifically calls for a payoff letter when the loan has been satisfied. It also distinguishes lienholder payment from customer payment.

Close the loop after submission

Ask for the cancellation reference, effective date, approved amount, refund issuer, payee and expected issue date. When payment arrives, reconcile it to the statement. If sent to a lender, confirm the credit actually posted.

Save the final confirmation even if the amount is zero. A written explanation lets you distinguish an expired contract, a deduction, a missing document and a payment-routing issue. Those problems require different follow-up questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund months after selling my car?

Possibly, but a delayed request can affect eligibility and the effective date. Supply the sale and mileage records and ask the provider to apply the contract’s rules.

Does CarMax or another buyer automatically cancel my warranty?

Do not assume so. Ask for a separate cancellation reference or check directly with the administrator. A vehicle purchase receipt is not cancellation confirmation.

What if I cannot find the policy?

Ask the original selling dealer for the agreement and all amendments using your VIN and purchase details. Request the contract number and administrator, not just a product brochure.
