Extended warranty refunds after a trade-in: what to do next
A trade-in does not by itself prove that your old vehicle service contract was canceled. Check the old contract, ask whether a request already exists, and follow the approved cancellation process for any unused refundable coverage.
Identify the three transactions
Trading a vehicle usually produces paperwork for the old car’s trade value, the old loan’s payoff and the new car’s purchase or financing. Your old warranty is a fourth item to verify. Look for its product name and contract number rather than assuming every add-on disappeared with the old car.
If the new dealer sold another service contract, keep the two agreements in separate folders. Tell anyone handling cancellation exactly which VIN and contract you mean. This simple step avoids canceling the coverage you intended to keep.
Check whether the dealer already submitted a cancellation
Ask who submitted it, on what date, to which administrator and under which reference number. A verbal promise is not the same as a received cancellation packet. If the dealer gives you a signed form, check whether it also has a receipt or status confirmation.
In one Reddit discussion about a Ford maintenance plan, the poster described discovering that the plan was still active after waiting for a refund. That is an unverified individual account, not a typical turnaround estimate. It illustrates why verifying submission is more useful than simply waiting longer.

Use the trade-in date and mileage accurately
Keep the trade agreement showing the old VIN, trade date and odometer reading. Ask the administrator whether it accepts those records for the requested effective date. If the paperwork contains a mileage typo, ask the dealer to correct the record rather than copying an error into the cancellation form.
Published forms differ. Total Warranty Services identifies trade paperwork with date and mileage as one acceptable mileage record. Protective’s form distinguishes trade-in from customer-request cancellation and asks for supporting records in certain circumstances. Match the form to your plan.

Verify the old loan payoff before directing payment
A trade-in agreement may show that the dealer intends to pay the lender; it does not always prove the lender has received and posted that payment. Get current confirmation from the lender when the administrator needs payoff evidence.
If the refund is approved before payoff is finalized, ask how an overpayment will be handled and who will send any remaining balance. Keep the lender’s reference number. Do not subtract an expected refund from a payment due on either loan without the lender’s agreement.
Ask whether a refund was used toward the new purchase
If the dealer says it applied the old warranty refund to your new down payment, ask for the amount, your authorization, the old contract identifier and the line item in the purchase documents. Compare that figure with the eventual approved refund.
This is an accounting question, not just a cancellation question. A canceled policy can still have an unresolved payment, and a preliminary dealer credit can differ from the administrator’s final calculation. Request written reconciliation before treating the transaction as finished.
Follow the refund to its final recipient
Zurich’s FAQ describes the selling dealer’s role in issuing cancellation refunds and distinguishes payment to a lienholder. Other products can use different arrangements. Ask your own administrator who approves the amount and who actually issues the payment.
Record the approved cancellation date, refund amount, recipient and expected payment date. If that date passes, follow up with the specific party holding the next step. Keep the old agreement until both cancellation and payment are documented.

Frequently asked questions
Does my warranty move to the new car?
Do not assume coverage transfers between vehicles. Ask the provider whether it offers a new agreement, credit or transfer option, and get the exact terms.
Can the new dealer cancel a policy bought somewhere else?
It may assist, but the contract’s accepted recipient and authorization rules still apply. Verify submission with the original administrator.
Can I get both a refund check and a down-payment credit?
Not for the same refunded amount. Reconcile any credit already applied before requesting an additional payment.
