How to cancel an extended car warranty and request a refund

By Car Warranty Refunds · Sources checked · 4 min read

You can often cancel a separately purchased vehicle service contract while it is active. To request a refund, follow its cancellation clause, supply the required evidence and obtain written confirmation. The amount depends on your agreement, usage, claims and applicable state rules.

Four cancellation stages: identify the agreement, submit evidence, confirm cancellation, and trace the refund.
A received request, approved cancellation and completed refund are separate milestones.

First, identify what you bought

“Extended warranty” usually describes a paid vehicle service contract. The FTC distinguishes this from a warranty included with the vehicle. Your sales paperwork may also contain separate GAP, prepaid maintenance, tire-and-wheel or appearance products. Each can have its own cancellation rules.

Find the product name and administrator on the agreement, not just the car badge or dealership sign. A Toyota sold with Fidelity coverage follows Fidelity’s process; a Ford sold with a third-party contract does not automatically follow Ford Protect rules.

  • Locate the complete agreement and state amendments, not only a sales brochure.
  • Match the VIN, contract number, purchase price, start date and starting mileage.
  • Write down the selling dealer, administrator, obligor and lender separately.

Check the cancellation window before waiting

Read the clause headed Cancellation, Termination or Refund. Identify the recipient, deadline, permitted delivery method, signature requirements and any fee. Ask whether the deadline is based on sending the request or the company receiving it. Keep evidence of both dates when possible.

Do not assume there is one nationwide 30-day rule or that unused repair benefits guarantee a full refund. Time and mileage may still count when you have made no claims. If a sales representative says you must wait for the first loan payment, ask for the contract provision supporting that instruction.

Build a cancellation packet

Use the provider’s current form whenever one is required. Enter actual dates and mileage; do not guess a historical odometer reading. An organized packet makes it easier for the recipient to identify what is missing.

  1. Make a copy of the agreement and its amendments.
  2. Add the contract holder’s name, VIN, agreement number and contact details.
  3. State the cancellation reason and requested effective date.
  4. Attach accepted mileage evidence and, if relevant, sale, trade-in or total-loss paperwork.
  5. Add lender payoff evidence if you are requesting payment after the loan was paid off.
  6. Review signatures, authorizations and refund payee before submitting.

Submit through the correct channel

Start with the route in your agreement and the provider’s current support page. Some providers offer direct consumer cancellation; others involve the selling dealer. Fidelity publishes both dealer and online routes. Endurance describes a cancellation form and mileage verification. These are examples, not interchangeable procedures.

Ask the recipient to acknowledge a complete request in writing. Save the submitted form, attachment list, confirmation number and receipt. If you already started through the dealer, check its status before opening a second request.

Check the calculation, payee and coverage end date

Ask for an itemized statement showing the contract price, effective date, mileage used, deductions and refund. Confirm who pays and who receives the money. The administrator approving a cancellation and the dealership issuing a payment may be different steps.

If you still own the car, establish when protection ends and which repairs or benefits will no longer be covered. Cancellation should be a deliberate coverage decision, not just a way to reduce an immediate bill. Do not treat the refund as a lower monthly loan payment until your lender confirms a revised payment schedule.

How our free cancellation help works

You can follow these guides yourself. If you want instructions for your exact agreement, upload the complete policy PDF and your phone number through our review form. We identify the likely route, required evidence, refund provisions and questions still needing an answer.

An upload requests review; it does not cancel coverage. You decide whether to proceed and approve any assisted submission. Our policy review and cancellation assistance are free for now. Contract fees charged by the provider are separate, and no refund amount or provider processing time is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel after I have used the warranty?

Possibly. Ask how paid claims affect eligibility and the calculation under your contract. Using coverage can reduce a refund and may change early-cancellation terms.

Do I have to sell the car to cancel?

Many contracts permit cancellation while you still own the car. Check your agreement, the consequences of losing coverage and any state amendments.

Does canceling the warranty cancel my car loan?

No. The vehicle loan and service contract are separate. Continue making required loan payments unless the lender gives you a changed schedule.
